
Former BJP president Bangaru Laxman spent his first night in jail on Friday. The Supreme Court convicted Bangaru for taking a Rs one lakh bribe to push a defence deal in a sting operation 11 years ago.

When Bangaru Laxman was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, he was caught on camera allegedly taking bribe from fake arms dealers for facilitating a fictitious defence deal case. Bangaru was caught on camera accepting money in a 2001 sting operation conducted by newsportal Tehelka.com. The video CDs, which were released by the portal on March 13, 2001, had sparked a political storm following which Bangaru resigned as BJP chief.
